Tragic Update on Cargo Plane Incident: Death Toll Rises to 13

The number of fatalities resulting from the UPS cargo plane which ignited and crashed has now reached 13, per latest reports.

Mayor's Remarks

While en route to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I learned of a 13th person that passed away as a result of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” stated the local official in a public communication. “My thoughts is with the families, associates and colleagues of all who were lost in this recent calamity. We will overcome this together.”

Casualties Identified

A statement from the carrier identified the pilots aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts reach out to each employee who has been impacted and everyone in our Louisville community – assisting you and ensuring you receive the attention and aid you need is our focus,” the firm’s communication read.

Inquiry Findings

Federal officials disclosed that the freight aircraft’s wing caught fire and an motor detached soon after departure from the aviation hub, resulting in the jet to crash and burst into a fireball.

The safety agency stated it is investigating the jet’s maintenance history, which was in Texas for fixes weeks before the accident.

Aircraft information indicated the jet was on the runway in the Texas city from the start of last month to mid-October.

“We are aware that this jet was located in San Antonio,” said an investigator on the following day, without providing a specific date range. “We will look at every piece of repairs that was performed, even the Texas visit, right up to the date of the flight.”

Retrieval of Key Components

The cockpit voice recorder and information unit were retrieved, and the motor was discovered on the runway.

The units – called black boxes – were constructed to withstand crash impacts and extreme temperatures from blazes, and they seemed to be undamaged when discovered within the wreckage. Officials plan on analyzing information from the black boxes.

Jet’s last recorded information showed an elevation of that level and a velocity of 210 miles per hour prior to the impact.

Repair Background

Per FAA documents dated 18 September, a crack on a component in the center wing fuel tank needed repairs.

Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it supplies airframe maintenance for the company’s aircraft and operates a service location in that city, refused to provide remarks, but expressed it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities contacted it.

Operations Continue

Meanwhile, UPS Worldport services restarted that evening with its express also known as nighttime process, official Jim Mayer confirmed. Each of the three runways at the aviation hub were also reopened.

The sorting center in Louisville is the company’s biggest. The hub employs over 20,000 people in the area, processes three hundred flights each day and organizes in excess of a huge volume of parcels an hour.

Community Support

A gathering was held on the late afternoon of 6 November by the regional labor union, which acts for employees at the aviation hub, the company’s largest freight center.

Worker representatives, which supports UPS workers, began the vigil with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the approximate time of the incident two days earlier.

“This tragedy was so abrupt, so unexpected,” the mayor told the assembly of attendees. “No one had a moment to say goodbye to any of those who we have said farewell to.”
